Concentration in Accounting

The coursework in the accounting concentration prepares students for accounting, auditing, or tax positions in public accounting firms, corporations, government agencies, or non-profit organizations. It is a rigorous accounting program that provides students the required education units to qualify for the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) exam. The program focuses on the knowledge of the U.S. financial reporting and auditing standards, federal taxation, business laws and regulations, and accountants’ professional responsibilities. It also enables students to develop professional communication and collaborative teamwork skills. The following courses are offered currently to complete this concentration:

The concentration in finance is designed to prepare you for a career in the financial management of business firms, banks, related financial institutions, investment banking, investment management, and securities brokerage. Concentration in General Management

The concentration in general management allows breadth of study in business fields. Students can choose 18 semester units of upper division elective courses offered by the College of Business and Economics (excluding ECON 300, ECON 385, BUS 385, MKTG 305) that meet their needs, interests, and career goals. Courses must be drawn from at least two different subject areas. Subject Areas: Economics (ECON), Finance (FIN), Human Resources & Organizational Behavior (MGMT), Information Technology Management (ITM), Operations & Supply Chain (MGMT), Marketing (MKTG).

Concentration in Human Resources Management and Organizational Behavior

The coursework in the Human Resources Management/Organizational Behavior (HRM/OB) concentration centers on how firms can best utilize their most critical resource, their employees, to create a work environment that promotes excellence. It prepares students for careers in HRM and also general management by providing a depth of knowledge in HRM functions, and also a breadth in the soft skills necessary for effective leadership, in a variety of organizations. Coursework is concerned with recruiting and selecting the best employees, determining fair compensation, learning how to comply with employment laws, performance management, people analytics, negotiations, leadership, creativity, and managing diverse teams. The following courses are offered currently to complete this concentration:

Concentration in Information Technology Management (ITM)

This concentration prepares the graduate for management positions in the IT (information technology) industry. With the emergence of technology such as the Internet, ERP systems and wireless communication, IT applications are now a fundamental and organic component of every business discipline. This concentration gives you a comprehensive overview of these applications in different functional areas of an organization such as accounting/finance, marketing, manufacturing, distribution and human resource management. As a graduate of this concentration, you would have a solid understanding of IT applications in different areas of business, how they embed within their respective business processes and add value to them. Concentration in Marketing Management 

The task of marketing is to help an organization create and maintain satisfying relationships with its important customers. Students completing the coursework in the Marketing Management concentration acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the needs of customers and the market, to design effective marketing strategies, and to successfully implement and monitor the chosen marketing program. Global competition coupled with technological advances forces both for-profit and nonprofit organizations to revitalize the marketing function for their success. The growing awareness of the importance of marketing has led to an increase in the number of marketing positions available. The concentration prepares students for careers in advertising and promotion, brand and product management, sales and sales management, retailing, non-profit, international marketing, marketing research, new product planning, marketing logistics and public relations.

Concentration in Operations and Supply Chain Management

This concentration is designed to prepare students to manage all the aspects of a firm’s operations and supply chain functions in order to increase its efficiency and effectiveness, improve quality and eliminate waste of resources. This concentration covers purchasing and management of the material resources in the supply chain process and distribution network, production and operations management within the firm, project management, service operations, and quality management. The BSBA Online Degree Completion Program is offered completely online, in an asynchronous format. As a student in the program, you’ll enjoy the options of using chat rooms, audio streaming, video clips, simulations, and other electronic tools offered through Canvas and other platforms.

Ekin Alakent

I believe that we can only learn when we are interested in something. My goal is to raise interest and facilitate learning by providing necessary foundation and tools.

Ekin Alakent is an assistant professor of management at the College of Business and Economics. Professor Alakent was born in Izmir, Turkey and lived there until 2002. She received her doctorate degree from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2006. She taught at the University of Texas at Arlington and Chapman University in Orange, CA before she joined faculty here at Cal State East Bay in 2008. Her research interests focus on organizational restructuring, emerging markets, and corporate political strategies. Her articles have appeared in such journals as Journal of Managerial Issues, Journal of Management Studies, Strategic Management Review, Business and Society and the Journal of Strategy and Management. She is living in Alameda, CA with her husband and two sons.

Sandip Basu

Learning comes more from challenging and discovering than knowing and remembering.

Dr. Sandip Basu has been at Cal State East Bay since Fall 2007 and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on strategic management, social responsibility, and innovation. His research examines phenomena such as external venturing, new venture creation, social entrepreneurship, and strategic renewal, and has been published in leading management journals.

Dr. Basu has a Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Washington, Seattle. He earlier completed an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from reputed schools in India. He has spent several years working in the foods, beverages, and metals industries in diverse management roles related to manufacturing operations, equipment purchasing, and project implementation. Dr. Basu constantly strives to draw on his “real-world” experience in teaching and research.

Eric Fricke

Eric Fricke, Ph.D. has nearly 25 years of industry experience. In addition to being an assistant professor of finance, Fricke previously served as director of Corporate Planning and Development for Emerson Electric where he managed strategic planning, acquisitions, business development, and product marketing functions of material handling equipment for automotive and restaurant industries. Fricke has been published in numerous publications, including the Journal of Financial Services Research, Journal of Academy of Business and Economics, International Research Journal of Applied Finance, and Advances in Financial Planning and Forecasting. Fricke was named Delta Sigma Pi Bay Area Region Chapter Advisor of the Year in 2012.

Mehmet Goktan

Grasping the intuition of a financial formula and putting it to words is much more difficult and rewarding than merely solving it numerically.

Professor Sinan Goktan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey in 2000, his MBA degree with concentration in finance from the University of North Texas in 2002, and his Ph.D. degree in finance from The University of Texas at Dallas in 2008.  He joined California State University, East Bay in Fall 2008 as an assistant professor of Finance.  At CSUEB, he has had a rewarding teaching experience. Selected with the votes of the students within the honors program, in 2013, he was given a “Certificate of Appreciation for the Outstanding Instruction”.  His research papers have been published and/or accepted for publication in highly prestigious journals such as Journal of Corporate Finance, Financial Management and Managerial Finance.  In 2014, I received the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Researcher at CSUEB and the Remmich Outstanding Research Award from the College of Business and Economics.

Vish Hegde

Effective teaching is not just content collection and distribution but also creating an experience in the classroom. Enlivened lectures and interactive discussions not only teach the content but also help students realize their practical relevance and apply them in real-world situations.

Dr. Vish Hegde is a professor of management at the California State University, East Bay. He has over 25 years of experience that spans both academic and industrial organizations. He started his career as a mechanical engineer and has worked for three years in aeronautical design and renewable energy systems areas. He obtained his Ph.D. in Operations Management from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997. He then worked for five years in IT companies of which four years was at PeopleSoft as a senior consultant and product manager. He was involved in the implementation of PeopleSoft ERP software at several companies and in IT infrastructure planning for application hosting services business. He joined CSUEB in 2002 to pursue an academic career, and he strives to bring a blend of academic expertise and industry experience into teaching, research, and consulting. He has published a number of refereed research articles on topics including e-commerce, supply chain management, and project management. He has taught for the executive MBA, graduate, and undergraduate programs of CSUEB. He has taught eleven subjects including project management, operations and supply chain management, e-commerce, business analytics, new product introduction, and management information systems. Dr. Hegde teaches project management certification programs to professionals and gives project management seminars and lectures to industry leaders such as BART and CISCO.

Sweety Law

Fluent in five languages, Dr. Sweety Law studied under and worked closely with Dr. Everett Rogers (author of the seminal “Diffusion of Innovations”) and his associate Dr. Arvind Singhal. A full professor in the College of Business and Economics, Dr. Law brings a global outlook to both her research and pedagogy. Winner of numerous research awards, she has published extensively in top journals including Journal of Workplace Learning, International Journal of Information Systems and Supply Chain Management, and Journal of Communication. She has also contributed book chapters and serves as invited reviewer for journals such as Supply Chain Management: An International Journal. Recipient of several grants including 2013-2014 CSUEB’s Programmatic Excellence in Instruction and Learning (PEIL), Dr. Law’s work in higher education stems from her philosophy to ‘make a difference’.

Zinovy Radovilsky, Ph.D.

Zinovy Radovilsky, Ph.D. is a professor of management and chair in the Department of Management at California State University, East Bay. He has taught a great variety of courses in statistical and quantitative analysis of business, forecasting, operations, and supply chain management. Dr. Radovilsky’s research interests include quantitative optimization in supply chain planning and scheduling, forecasting, e-commerce business modeling, and enterprise resource planning and management. He has published over 30 papers in refereed journals, four book chapters, and one textbook. Dr. Radovilsky served as an editor and member of the board of two research journals, Journal of International Business and Economics, and Journal of Supply Chain and Operations Management.

Jyotishka Ray

I believe in the teaching strategy asserted by Benjamin Franklin – ‘Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.’ I always try to create a classroom environment that facilitates discussion and encourages students to share their ideas.

Dr. Jyotishka Ray completed his PhD from the University of Texas at Dallas in Information Systems before joining CSUEB in 2017. He also has a master’s degree in operations research and statistics from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology. He derives satisfaction in teaching by passing knowledge to the students. His courses include BigData analytics, data analytics using SAS, data warehousing, database management, and Java programing. His research includes commercialization of software products, demonstrations, negotiation, and recommender systems. Dr. Ray has published research articles in Production and Operations Management and Information Systems Research. He recently received Faculty Support Grant for a project involving IoT data analysis.

Filippo Rebessi

A good economic model, with his diagrams and equations, can teach a clever story about people.

Dr. Filippo Rebessi is an assistant professor of economics at the College of Business and Economics at Cal State East Bay. Dr. Filippo received his PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 2016. His main research fields are Macroeconomics and Public Finance. His research has been published in Mathematical Social Sciences and has been presented in various international conferences. In 2017, his Global Economic Analysis course received Quality Matters Certification.

Y. Robert Lin

Learning is a journey which requires commitment and self-discipline to be successful.

Dr. Y. Robert Lin has over 20 years of teaching and consulting experience in accounting and information systems areas. Dr. Lin received his PhD from UCLA, his Master of Accountancy from Florida State, and holds a Certificate of Management Accountant. He is an enrolled agent for the Internal Revenue Services and has passed CPA exams/taught CPA review courses.

Raj Shea

Plant the education seeds and reap the reward upstream.

Dr. Raj Shea is a technology transfer expert who facilitates the licensing and commercialization of a wide variety of NASA technologies. Responsible for administrating a portfolio of existing technologies, Dr. Shea works with clients to identify and evaluate new inventions for commercial potential, markets to and initiates contacts with potential licensees, negotiates and closes license agreements with industry partners, and develops intellectual property protection strategies. . He also performs assessments of patentability, market potential and overall commercial potential and provides recommendations to the team regarding strategic methods to commercialize the technology. He previously served as an International Trade Specialist for the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service, leading high-tech trade missions to emerging markets and implementing high-priority export promotion programs and events which are central to agency trade development objectives.

Tammie Simmons Mosley

My overall student learning outcome is for students to have knowledge of applicable qualitative and quantitative problem solving skills coupled with an aptitude for technology. These decision-making tools are critical for students to successfully advance themselves forward in the Finance and Real Estate industries.

Dr. Simmons Mosley joined CSUEB’s Finance faculty in 2003.  She teaches Finance and Real Estate courses.  Prior to joining CSUEB, she was a Finance Professor at Lehigh University.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Business. Dr. Simmons Mosley has publications in numerous well respected academic peer reviewed Real Estate and Finance journals including Journal of Real Estate Research, Journal of Housing Economics, Journal of Housing Research, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Portfolio Management.  Dr. Simmons Mosley incorporates her research and background into teaching courses to help students apply analytical frameworks to model and interpret qualitative concepts to improve their problem-solving skills.

Timothy Wat

If history has taught us anything, it is that one woman or man can change an entire city. So be the change you want to see.

Tim Wat has enjoyed a 20-year career in executive management, business development, technology, and finance. He has turned around industry influencers, helped take companies public, led diverse teams, and planned and executed successful strategy. As an instructor, he is committed to preparing his students for the real world, while also challenging them to attain far more than mere material success. Students concur that Wat’s long experience in executive leadership drives his engagement in the classroom. Aside from teaching, Wat enjoys an active career as a professional jazz pianist throughout Northern California.

Chongqi Wu

Knowledge is powerful. But it is how we use it that defines us. It is without any doubt very important to teach our students useful knowledge, skills and tools like optimization, forecasting, and software applications. I try to show how the knowledge, skills and tools can be used to achieve sustainability, enabling our planet and societies to continue supporting human lives of future generations.

Dr. Wu received his Bachelor of Engineering in Transportation Management from Northern Jiaotong University and MS in Economics from Peking University in China. He obtained his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before joining CSUEB, he was an assistant professor of management at Alabama A&M University. He has published scholarly articles in journals such as Decision Sciences and International Journal of Production Economics. He serves as reviewer for journals such as Production and Operations Management, Decision Sciences, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Economics and International Journal of Production Research, and for publishers such as Pearson and Springer. He currently teaches Decision Sciences, Operations Management, and Supply Chain Management.

Peng Xie

Learning the way to learn via learning is more important than learning what is required in class.

Dr. Peng Xie obtained his PhD in Information System Management from Georgia Institute of Technology and joined California State University, East Bay as an assistant professor in 2017. He puts a great emphasis on inspiring students to use the knowledge and skills learned in class into practices and to identify and solve real-world problems. He has taught six different subjects in both BSBA and MSBA programs and earned excellent teaching evaluations from students. I believe students should experience frequent and repeated opportunities to act, react, and interact with each other and the instructor. My goal is to provide an active and stimulating learning environment.

Dr. Ya You is an Assistant Professor of Marketing in the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the California State University, East Bay. She has taught several undergraduate and MBA courses such as Digital Marketing, Marketing Analytics, and Marketing Research. Dr. You received the 2017-2018 CBE Innovative Teaching Award. Her research interests include online word-of-mouth, social media, advertising, and marketing strategies. Her research has been published in Journal of Marketing, and has been covered in several media outlets including Science Daily and Phys.org. She is the recipient of the 2015 Marketing Science Institute H. Paul Root Award. She received her PhD from the University of Central Florida.

Admission Requirements

You must complete at least four out of seven of the following requirements before being admitted into the program.

Note: You may complete the remaining lower division major requirements concurrently at a community college, while enrolled in our program. You may also satisfy requirements from credit awarded for external examinations, including the College-Level Examination Program, the International Baccalaureate, the College Board Advanced Placement Tests, and the Defense Language Proficiency Test.

In order to be accepted at Cal State East Bay into the BSBA Online Degree Completion Program, you must:

  • Have completed a minimum of 60 transferable semester (90 quarter) units
  • Have a grade point average of 2.0 or better in all transferable units attempted
  • Be in good standing at the last college or university attended
  • Have completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter) units of college coursework with a grade of "C" or better in each course

What makes this program distinctive?
We provide our students with a strong business foundation including in-depth knowledge of global business affairs, ethical responsibility, technological and analytical tools, communication skills and teamwork, and general management know-how. This program offers the ability to earn your business degree in a more convenient manner, with all course requirements offered online.
Who should enroll in this program?
This program is geared toward working adults who want to attend an AACSB-accredited university to complete their BS in Business Administration degree online.
Are the examinations taken online?
All of the exams for the coursework are 100 percent online, and you do not need to have them proctored. The University has a Writing Skills Requirement, which you may either test out of (in person at CSUEB, or by having it proctored at another college), or satisfy by coursework.
Is this program accredited?
Yes, we have the highest accreditation, from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), which is held by less than 5 percent of business schools worldwide.
Who teaches the BSBA Online classes?
The faculty are university professors, who also teach in our on-ground program.
Will it show on my transcript or diploma that I earned this degree online?
No, it will not show on either your transcript or diploma that you earned this degree online.
Will my diploma look the same as if I earned my degree by attending classes at CSUEB?
Yes, your diploma will look exactly the same as if you earned your BSBA by going to classes on campus.
What type of degree is conferred from this program?
The degree is a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, the exact same degree as our on-ground program.
What concentrations are available in this program?
Currently we offer concentrations in Accounting, Finance, General Management, Human Resources Management & Organizational Behavior, Information Technology Management, Marketing Management, and Operations & Supply Chain Management.
What is the length of this program?
This is a self-paced program. It is not cohort based, so you will be choosing your own schedule each term. The program length will vary depending on the number of units needed to complete the degree.
How many upper division courses do I need to complete to earn my degree?

You will need to complete 18 upper division major requirements, and 2 upper division General Education courses, to earn your degree.

Are BSBA Online students eligible to participate in the University’s Commencement Ceremony?
Yes, BSBA Online students are eligible to participate, and we encourage them to do so.
What is the cost?
Each 3 unit course costs $1,299 each, which does not include books. (Tuition fees are subject to change at any time.)
Will I be able to meet with a professor in person?
Yes, you are welcome to come to campus and meet with your professor or teacher in person.
What is required to graduate?
In addition to major requirements, you must also complete the University requirements for graduation which are described in the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements chapter in the University catalog. These include the General Education-Breadth requirements; the U.S. history, U.S. Constitution, and California state and local government requirement; the University Writing Skills requirement; and the residence, unit, and grade point average requirements.
Is the program cohort-based?
No. While you may start out with the same classmates, you are not locked into an inflexible timeline. For convenience, you can begin in any one of the three academic semesters. You can also fit your academic timeline to your work or family schedule by taking only one class per semester or skipping a semester.
Do I need to come to CSUEB's campus to complete the program?
No, courses in the Online BSBA Degree Program are offered completely online and campus attendance is not required or needed to complete the program.
How do I apply for graduation?

To file for graduation, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to MyCSUEB with your NetID and password. Under “Student Center,” select the “Apply for Graduation” link and follow the prompts to select the degree and term for your graduation. Please refer to Important Dates to view the deadlines to file for graduation.
  2. After you file for graduation, a $55 graduation filing fee will be applied to your student account.
  3. Contact your major department to initiate a graduation check form, which will be completed by the department and sent to the graduation evaluations office for further review.

Applicants must meet upper division transfer application and admission requirements, which include: 

  • All lower division G.E. requirements
  • At least 4 of the 7 lower division major requirements, with a “C-” or better
