As a student in Cal State East Bay’s Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, you’ll be academically and clinically prepared for state licensure, national certification in Speech-Language Pathology by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA), and the Speech-Language-Hearing Services credential to work in public school settings.

This program will equip you to effectively advocate for the human rights of all individuals and competently serve children and adults with speech, language, cognition, and swallowing disorders in a clinical setting. Accreditation is currently pending.

Cal State East Bay’s Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) is offered in a convenient online format to fit your busy schedule. Additionally, a two-week in-person summer residency will give you the opportunity to connect and build a support network with your peers and instructors.

The Prestige of A Cal State Degree With the Convenience of An Online Program

All course instruction is delivered via an online approach for 8 semesters (3 years, including summers). Additionally, during the first summer you will attend a two-week residency on campus and reside in on-campus housing. This provides a valuable opportunity to foster a collegial work relation with professors and class members.

Capstone Requirement

Students must pass the Master’s Comprehensive exam or complete an oral presentation of a finished Master’s thesis or project, which demonstrates eligibility for clinical licensure and certification in Speech Language Pathology.

Faculty members in the CSUEB Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Department hold clinical practice expertise in a variety of medical settings, schools, nonprofits, and private practices. Additionally, they maintain active engagement in research and professional organizations.

Elena Dukhovny

Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dr. Elena Dukhovny is an Associate Professor in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. She received an M.A. in CSD from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in Cognition and Development, with emphasis in Special Education, from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Dukhovny is a licensed clinical speech-language pathologist who has worked in school-based, private practice, non-profit and university settings since 2002, with a focus on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Her recent research has focused on developing effective support systems for para-educators who work with users of speech-generating devices (SGDs). Previously, she has also explored the effects of SGD interface design on procedural learning and therefore on fluency of language production via SGD.

Michelle Gravier

Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Dr. Michelle Gravier received her M.A.-SLP and Ph.D. from San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Her clinical experience and research focus are in adult acquired language disorders with a specialty in neuroimaging.  She has practiced in a variety of medical settings, most recently VA Pittsburgh’s Program for Residential Aphasia Treatment and Education (PIRATE). Dr. Gravier’s research aims to: (1) identify factors that determine which individuals with aphasia are good candidates for restorative language treatments and non-invasive brain stimulation, and (2) examine the relationships between structural and functional brain plasticity, language treatment, and aphasia recovery.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission into the program, you must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology, communication sciences and disorders, or the equivalent (i.e. post-bachelor's certificate or completion of “leveling program”).

Foundational coursework minimum requirements include content in:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing
  • Phonetics/Phonological Disorders
  • Child Language Development/Disorders
  • Speech and Hearing Science
  • Neuroanatomy/Neurophysiology and Adult Neurocognitive Disorders
  • Audiology/Audiometry

Is the program accredited?
Our in-person program is fully accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Accreditation for our online program is currently pending.
Which term do you accept applications for?
Fall only.

Can I transfer courses from another program?
No. Transfer students or courses from other speech-language pathology graduate programs are not accepted.
Can I work while attending your program?
Yes. The part-time, hybrid program is designed to be flexible for working professionals and/or those with other obligations that preclude enrollment in a full-time program.
When are courses offered?
Courses are typically offered in the evenings.
Can I take courses without being admitted to the program?
No.
